The Picasso ceramic numbered A.R. 109, titled “Tête de chèvre de profil” (“Goat’s Head in Profile”), is a striking example of Pablo Picasso’s ceramic work, created in 1950–1952 at the Madoura pottery studio in Vallauris, France.
This piece is a white earthenware ceramic plate with a diameter of approximately 25,5 cm, formed from traditional clay and enhanced with oxidized paraffin decoration and glaze. The central motif is a stylized goat’s head in profile, rendered with bold, rhythmic lines that embody Picasso’s unique artistic language. The expressive contours and simplified forms capture both the strength and quiet presence of the animal, a subject that recurs throughout Picasso’s work across many mediums.
Produced in a limited edition of 60 pieces, each plate is numbered and stamped on the reverse with ‘Madoura Plein Feu’ and ‘Empreinte Originale de Picasso’, confirming its authenticity and origin from the famed Madoura studio. The fusion of functional ceramics with Picasso’s modernist approach to form and line makes this work a compelling blend of utility and artistic expression. It stands as a testament to Picasso’s creative breadth and his ability to bring dynamic life to even simple, everyday subjects in clay.
